IN ST. PETERSBURG
The State Hermitage Museum ranks among the world's major museums. Its collection consists of nearly three million art objects. Exhibits are displayed in the Winter Palace, as well as the Small, Old and New Hermitages. Concerts and ballet performances are given in the former Hermitage Theater. The Hermitage collection has six departments: West European art, the Antique world, primitive culture, Oriental culture and art, and the history of Russian culture, as well as numismatics (open daily 10:30-18.00, on Thurs. 12:00-20:00, and closed on Mon., schedule subject to change; $170*).
The Russian Museum is among the greatest collections of national culture. It features over 350,000 art objects which cover nearly one thousand years of Russian history. The Russian Museum holds some of the best paintings and engravings by Russian artists, as well as the country's largest collection of sculptures (open daily 10:00-18:00, closed on Tue., schedule subject to change; $150*).
St. Peter & St. Paul Fortress is the city's first building, intended to secure Russia's hold on the Neva Delta. The fortress' role as a prison dates back to 1718. The Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul was the burial place of the Russian Tsars starting with Peter the Great (open daily 11:00-17:00 in summer, closed the last Wed. of each month , schedule subject to change; $170*).
St. Isaac's Cathedral, a unique architectural monument, was designed by Auguste Montferrand. The Cathedral is decorated with beautiful icons, mosaics, sculptures and paintings dating back to the 19th century. Construction of the Cathedral lasted from 1818 till 1842, and decoration took additional 16 years, from 1842 till 1858 (open daily 11:00-18:00, closed on Wed., schedule subject to change; $150*).
IN MOSCOW
The Moscow Kremlin has incredible historical and artistic values, and holds masterpieces of Russian and world culture.
It includes six museums: the Armory; four Cathedrals:
the St. Michael the Archangel, of the Annunciation, of the Assumption and the Church of the Deposition of the Robe; and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (open daily 10:00-17:00, closed Thurs., schedule subject to change; $190*).
The Novodevichy Convent located in the most picturesque place in the south west of Moscow is a beautiful monument of 16th and 17th century architecture. This wonderful history, life-style and art museum is open daily 10:00-17:30, closed Tue. and the first Mon. of each month, schedule subject to change; $170*.
The Church of St. Basil the Blessed and the Red Square is one of the most original, unique, and impressive monuments of world architecture, a dominant feature of the Red Square. The Intercession Cathedral was built in the 16th century by architects Barma and Posnik to commemorate the victory over the Kazan Khanate (open daily except Tues. and the first Mon. of each month, November-April from 11:00 to 16:00, May-October from 10:00 to 17:00, schedule subject to change; $170*).
The State Tretyakov Gallery displays wonderful collections of icons, some of the best Russian paintings and sculptures, as well as multiethnic art of the 20th century Russia. This museum is the world's biggest museum of Russian arts. The Gallery was founded by Pavel Tretyakov in 1856, and later donated by him to Moscow (open daily from 10:00 till 19:00, except Mon., schedule subject to change; $180*).
